Cambodian Government Still Wishes to Maintain Good Relations with Foreign States Involved in Kem Sokha's Case

PHNOM PENH: The Phnom Penh Municipal Court prosecutor has stated that the Royal Government of Cambodia still wishes to maintain good relations with the foreign states that have backed Kem Sokha and been involved in his case. He added that the court documentation relevant to these foreign countries will be kept confidential.

On Friday, 3 March 2023, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court prosecutor confirmed that Kem Sokha was found guilty for conspiring with foreign countries, however, the names of the foreign states involved will not be publicly disclosed.

Court documents have redacted the names of the foreign states to ensure confidentiality.

"Any person or party that leaks this document to the public shall be punished according to the Penal Code of the Kingdom of Cambodia," the prosecutor added.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday, 3 March, sentenced former CNRP leader, Kem Sokha, to 27 years of house arrest for conspiring with foreign states. Sokha has been indefinitely banned from politics and voting in elections, but will be allowed to carry out his sentence at home instead of in prison. In addition, he will not be able to meet with anyone besides his family members, unless special permission is granted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
